Just like I stated in my previous post, the question “what does it really mean to be successful?” is a universal question but it has no universal answer. In other words, it has no universally accepted answer as each individual, group or institution has different opinion with regards to that.
Let’s briefly look at different meanings of success according to different persons. There are three different opinions which we are going to consider in this article. They are:
- Those who see success as wealth beyond measures
- Those who see it as achieving good reputation and
- Those who view as achievement of both wealth and good reputation
Let’s briefly look at each of them.
Success as wealth beyond measures
This school of thought believes that money answers all things; money is the the ultimate solution. In fact, with money you have joy and happiness. Most times, they do not really care about the source of the money. All they do is to merry since the money is there.
They are always afraid of hardship as they hate out rightly. Well, no one derives joy in suffering but this group of people can go any length to make sure they make money.
Truthfully, money answers all things but does it really mean success? We shall answer this question in the course of this article.
This particular school has two sets of people under it which are:
- Those who pursue money in a legal way
- Those who pursue money in an illegal way
Those who pursue money in a legal way
The first set of people go extra mile to make sure they make their own money in a cool way. They believe that your wealth will not last long if you make it in a questionable manner. In other words, they also believe that you will not enjoy any wealth made in a questionable manner as you will not have the rest of mind while enjoying it.
For the reasons above and more, they want to create a wealth which they will be proud to tell the story tomorrow.
Those who pursue wealth by all means
This set of people just need wealth no matter the source. They don’t care about any other thing other than to lay hold on the money. They do not have principles of wealth creation.
This could be caused by the circumstances they have undergone or the training given to them from childhood and once they acquire the wealth it is obvious that just few can manage the wealth.
Success as achieving good reputation
This school of thought believes that what people say about you determines whether you are successful or not. According to them, acquisition of material things is not the ultimate measure of success. They believe in the saying of King Solomon in his book of proverbs 22:1 which reads,
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold
In their opinion, if people have no good reports about you then, you are unsuccessful no matter the amount of wealth you have acquired.
One of the reasons for believing this is that one needs to affect lives positively before claiming to be successful. Secondly, if one is rich but does not gain good report from people, then his wealth is in vain as he will he will only be remembered for his evils when he dies.
For one to build good reputation it means he/she must have helped or affected the lives of others.
They also believe that wealth is an addition to success.
One may ask, if not wealth, what then will these set of people use to help lives?
They help lives with the little they can afford. “Build good relationship with people. With or without help, be of help to others. Do not give yourself any credit, let others do it for you”. That is what they believe in.
Achievement of both wealth and good reputation
This is the last but not the least school of thought. This school of thought believes that success is not complete if not accompanied by both wealth and good reputation.
This simply means that “if you have wealth without good reputation then you are not using it wisely or you did not acquire it in the right way. On the other hand, if you have good reputation without wealth, of what use is the good reputation since you will still die in poverty?”
Wealth should work hand in hand with good reputation. If you are wealthy, then you will be able to effect your good reputation but if you are poor you will not be able to do so.
More so, if one is wealthy, he helps, not only those close to him, but the society at large.
When Does one starts saying he is successful?
Before you start saying you are successful, you must have achieved your plans in life. You must have established what others outside your family benefit from.
Also, journey to success does not stop anywhere except in death. It is a life time journey. You must keep So, you must keep going if so that people will be convinced that you are really successful.
Bottom line – What does success mean to you?
Our Opinion: any success journey which you cannot share before everyone without fear is not yet a success. Once you are afraid of writing your success story due to its source, I’m afraid you have not made any success. Tell people the source of your wealth, how you built your reputation or reputation + wealth.
Real success, no matter your school of thought, means an achievement made in a manner that is approved by all or greater number people. Achievements which grants you the peace of mind is a real success.
Success in life could mean raising a good home, making money, building good reputation, building good relationship with people and so on. It does not stop at wealth and reputation.
